This performance was taken from the VAI release of a 1950's Hunter College concert. Much is known about Victoria de los Angeles, but much less about her accompanist for over 22 years, my father Paul Berl. He graduated from the Vienna Academy of Music in conducting and in composition as a student of Franz Schmidt. He commenced a conducting career in Germany which was terminated by the Nazi takeover in 1933. A Jewish refugee, he fled to the United States where he rebuilt his career teaching at the Mannes College of Music, Manhattan College and Yale University School of Music. He played briefly with violinist Nathan Milstein in the early 50's and was the accompanist and coach of Erna Berger, Mack Harrell and Pilar Lorengar among others. After his death in 1974, a memorial concert was held at the Mannes College of Music and Frederica von Stade and I performed music that he had loved.
