James Kreger, cellist and David Golub, pianist play Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, by Robert Schumann Website: Recognizing the inherent possibilities of the recently developed valved horn in the winter of 1849, Schumann worked in a white heat, composing the Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 in four days, February 14 -- 17, 1849. He specified that the work could be performed by other instruments, including the 'cello. It has become one of the composer's most popular compositions. When Clara Schumann first played the fresh new work with a horn player, she apparently exclaimed: "A magnificent piece, fresh and passionate, just what I like!"
