Alone amongst the great Requiems of the classical repertoire, Brahms' "A German Requiem" (Ein Deutches Requiem) eschews the typical Christian themes in favor of a more humanist approach -- using quotations from the Old Testament, New Testamnent and the Apocrypha, but avoiding specific mention of Christ or even a final redemption at the hands of God: instead focusing on the very human sentiments which surround the death of a loved one. A second spotlight performance for the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and conducted by JoAnn Falletta. The program also features a world premiere Cello Concerto by Sir John Tavener featuring BPO principal cello, Roman Mekinulov.
