Daniel Sharp, flute Graduate Recital Jan. 16th, 2011 San Francisco Conservatory of Music Takemitsu's Voice is a work full of intensity and struggle. This work is not just written for flute, but for the flutist. Incorporating many sounds involving breath, articulation, and the actual human voice (singing, whispering, speaking, and shouting), the piece's progression reveals a literal struggle between the player and the voice. It is up to the performer's interpretation as to whether Takemitsu intended this to be an actual voice tormenting the player, or rather a figment of the mind.
