CAROLINE SHAW Blueprint Aizuri Quartet: Miho Saegusa, violin Zoë Martin-Doike, violin Ayane Kozasa, viola Karen Ouzounian, cello Performed on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia Since their time in residence at Curtis from 2014 to 2016, the Aizuri Quartet has toured the world extensively with repertoire both old and new. Today’s #CurtisIsHere video features the title track of the Aizuri’s Grammy-nominated debut album, Blueprinting. Caroline Shaw’s Blueprint joyously celebrates how old and new can collide in the work of contemporary composers. In this music a Shaw creates a playful conversation among herself, Haydn (considered the father of the string quartet), and Beethoven (listen for references to his Op. 18 No. 6 quartet). No doubt Haydn and Beethoven, each a musical punster in his own right, would have gotten a kick out of this raucous, exuberant work by the youngest-ever Pulitzer-Prize winner for music. —Nicholas DiBerardino Learn
