I. Allegretto II. Moderato con moto III. Allegro non troppo IV. Adagio (attacca) V. Moderato Shostakovich’s 1945 Ninth Symphony, (his op. 70), although well received by audiences, had been criticized by the Soviet establishment for its ‘rejection of great serious problems’. Perhaps to avoid similar criticism, Shostakovich allegedly gave a story-line to his Third Quartet, which was premiered a year later: “I. Blithe ignorance of the future cataclysm II. Rumblings of unrest and anticipation III. Forces of war unleashed IV. In memory of the dead V. The eternal question: why? and for what?” The fourth movement, a sensitive passacaglia, flows directly into the last, in which themes of the previous movements are recalled.
