Performance of Deluge by Michael Hopkins by students from the Pioneer H.S. Orchestras, Jonathan Glawe, director, at the Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts in August 2015. Visit to purchase this piece. This piece was commissioned by Reid Smith for the three Farmington High School Orchestras to perform as a festival work. The premiere was on May 16, 2013. I named the piece “Deluge” because when I met with the students in the Fall 2012 to get their ideas for the piece a theme that kept coming up over and over was about the “great flood” of Farmington High School. It is one of those Old English words that I’ve always liked. It has an unusual spelling and sound. After the premiere I set the work aside for several years, and then reworked it in the current form. The piece was written to represent a “day in the life” of a Farmington High School student. The opening is the “passing period music” in E minor. This should be played short with
