Donald Erb: The Devil's Quickstep New Music Ensemble March 29, 2009 The Devil's Quickstep was composed during the summer of 1982, spent on a farm in Spencer, West Virginia. The title is actually taken from an old Appalachian mountain fiddle tune, inspired by a tale of a young man who receives his just desserts, falling off a cliff after taking up the devil's instrument, the fiddle. An NEA Consortium Commission, it was first performed by Voices of Change in Dallas during the 1982-83 season
