"Blaze" was commissioned by the Seattle Symphony, with financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts. It is a one movement work that became an expression of my temperament reflecting the qualities of youth - energy, drive, passion, tenderness and the like. Viewed in retrospect, it is a musical 'coming of age' - youth growing into maturity - and thus the title. It is in three distinct sections. The first section is full of determined energy, emotionally charged, with a steady pulse and vivid orchestration. The second section, in contrast, has a feeling of weightlessness. The last section brings back materials from the previous sections but in disguise. Boisterous, driving rhythms are the crux of this section, using continuous eighth-notes to propel the piece to a triumphant close.
