The CIM Opera Theater production of Poulenc's "Dialogue of the Carmelites" opened Wednesday night, Feb. 27, in Kulas Hall--earning a rave review from Cleveland Plain Dealer writer Donald Rosenberg. Directed by David Bamberger with Harry Davidson conducting the CIM Orchestra, the cast, orchestra and sets all earned high marks from Mr. Rosenberg. Two performances remain, tonight and tomorrow. A prodigy who attended Howard University at age 15, Roberta Flack went on to win back-to-back Record of the Year Grammy Awards for “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (1973) and “Killing Me Softly with His Song” (1974) — a feat matched only by the band U2. Today, at 73, she remains passionate about music and promotes music education through the Roberta Flack School of Music at the Hyde Leadership Charter School in New York. It was an opera-full week in Northeastern Ohio with CIM and Oberlin each presenting comic operas, offering audiences multiple opportunities to experience fabulous performances while providing reviewers, like Donald Rosenberg, scheduling challenges. Severance Hall had its usual glow on Wednesday, Sept. 12, when Carl Topilow, director of the Cleveland Institute of Music orchestral program, presented a remarkable concert. All three works played were true masterworks—two from the Twentieth Century and one from the Nineteenth. It is difficult to choose the highpoint, because all three pieces were beautifully performed.
