The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony’s performance of Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony was captivating throughout; the clarity of rhythm and the musical conviction of the players were superb in what was a sparkling account. Music Director and Conductor David Bernard made the most of Beethoven’s melodic material by emphasizing the shape of the musical line, and Beethoven’s trademark sforzandos (heavy accents) were punctuated with tremendous vigor. All dynamics were presented with great contrast, but Bernard also brought out the nuanced, Haydnesque elements in the music: the humor, the grace, the lightness of touch in the orchestration, and he emphasized the Viennese dance music that permeates the score.

Our 2010-2011 season will bring four enticing programs featuring world-class soloists. Each concert program is designed to offer an unforgettable experience with some of the greatest music of all time. Our first program will be held on Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17. Entitled “Springtime Serenade”, this program features music that evokes nature. Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, the “Pastorale”, is paired with Copland’s sublime Appalachian Spring and Cimarosa’s hauntingly beautiful Oboe Concerto, performed by Pedro Diaz of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Next we offer “Baroque Celebration” on Saturday, December 11 and Sunday, December 12. This program features Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by David Chan, Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and continues with Vivaldi’s Gloria performed with the Florilegium Chorale. Finally, we will ask audience members to join the orchestra and chorus to sing an assortment of holiday songs and Christmas carols. And to ge
