Johann Strauss Sr., Composer
(1804-1849) Austrian composer. After playing in Josef Lanner's dance orchestra, he began to composer waltzes and galops of his own, which quickly became popular. He soon was touring Central Europe (1830's), with trips to Paris and London. His music and performances were well received, but ill health forced him to curtail his travels.
