Alessandro Scarlatti, Composer
Palermo-born Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), keyboardist and Italian Baroque composer of operas, oratorios and cantatas, and father of Domenico and Pietro, is credited for founding the Neapolitan school of opera. A master of music for voice, Scarlatti composed over 700 cantatas and made his name during the height of the rage for Italian opera with his 66 stage productions, including L'honestà negli amori (1680) and La Griselda (1721).
