Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Composer

(1844 - 1908).  Russian composer.  He had little formal musical training, but over time he developed the finest technique of any of his colleagues in the famed "Russian Five" (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, and Mussorgsky).  His works helped establish a Russian national school of music, and shaped the course of Russian orchestral and operatic music for generations to come.
