Henry Purcell, Composer
(1659 - 1695) English composer, singer, and organist. As a young boy, Purcell sang at the Chapel of King Charles II, and later rose to the position of organist at Westminster Abbey. He wrote many works for the stage, but only one opera - Dido and Aeneas (1689), which is his masterpiece. In the final 10 years of his short life he wrote well over 400 works, including most of his best known compositions.
