(1836-1891).  French organist and composer, especially of ballets, operettas and operas. Delibes studied at the Paris Conservatory under Adolphe Adam, whose ballet "Giselle" remains a perenniel favorite.  Then, Delibes went on to advance the cause of romantic ballet with his own dance masterpieces, "Coppelia" (1870) and "Sylvia" (1876).  Both works remain all-time ballet favorites, inspiring future generations of choreographers and composers, including Tchaikovsky.
