Biography

Founded in 1991, Belgrade Early Music Festival is the first festival of its kind in Serbia. Devoted to the performance of music from Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments, during its rich 30-year history the Festival has welcomed such ensembles as "New Trinity Baroque" (USA); "Sprezzatura" (UK); "Die Kölner Akademie" (Germany); "Block6 the Hague" (Switzerland); “Il Rossignolo”, "I Bassifondi", "Seicento Stravagante"  and “Concerto de’ Cavalieri” (Italy); “Artemandoline” and “cantoLX” (Luxemburg); “Antiphonus”, "Croatian Baroque Ensemble" and “Minstrel” (Croatia); as well as domestic (Serbian) ensembles such as “Renesans”, “Musica Antiqua Serbiana”, “VisAntiqua”, “Flauto Dolce”, “Belgrade Baroque”, “Melódi” and others. Vocal and instrumental soloists that appeared at the Festival include prominent names such as soprano Evelyn Tubb (UK); contralto Marijana Mijanovic (Switzerland); tenor Antonio Figueroa (Canada); baritone Christian Hilz (Germany);  lutenists  Simone Vallerotonda (Italy) and  Michael Fields (UK); harpsichordists Aline Zylberajch (France), Steven Devine (UK) and Predrag Gosta (USA/Serbia); baroque trumpet players Friedemann Immer (Germany), Justin Bland (USA) and Luca di Marco (Italy); baroque violinists Florian Deuter (Germany) and Ilia Korol (Austria); as well as baroque cellist André Laurent O’Neil (USA) and many others.


The Artistic Director of the Festival is Predrag Gosta -internationally renowned conductor, harpsichordist and early music scholar. Maestro Gosta has been the most crucial and influential person in developing the Festival to its current renomé - in the recent years, the Festival has grown to a three-week event, with over 15 concerts in its main series, fringe concerts, as well as number of masterclasses and workshops in historical performance practice. A regular partner of the Festival is the New Belgrade Opera that has presented several baroque opera perforamances in conjunction with the Festival. Masterclasses and workshops have been also presented in conjunction with  the Belgrade Baroque Academy.
