Alexei Markov was born in Vyborg.
From 2001–2008 he was a soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers.
He joined the Mariinsky Opera Company in 2008.

Alexei Markov has toured with the Mariinsky Opera Company to the Deutsche Oper (Berlin), the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall (New York), the Barbican Hall (London), the Kennedy Center (Washington) and the Suntory Hall (Tokyo) in addition to appearances at festivals in Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Mikkeli (Finland), Eilat (Israel) and Baden-Baden (Germany).

From 2006–2008 Alexei Markov appeared as a guest soloist at the Oper Frankfurt (Tomsky in The Queen of Spades and Scarpia in Tosca), Dresden’s Semperoper (Iago in Otello) and the Oper Graz in Austria (Renato in Un ballo in maschera).

In December 2007 Alexei Markov made a highly successful debut at the Metropolitan Opera (New York) as Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (War and Peace), where he has subsequently appeared as Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Shchelkalov (Boris Godunov) and Marcello (La bohème).

Between 2008 and 2011 Alexei Markov performed the roles of Eugene Onegin at the festival in La Coruña (Spain) and opera houses in Zurich (Switzerland), Lyon (France) and Monte Carlo (Monaco), Gryaznoi (The Tsar’s Bride) at Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra, the Conte di Luna (Il trovatore) at the Opèra National de Bordeaux (France) and Robert at the Salzburg Festival (Austria).

In the 2011–2012 season Alexei Markov took part in a new production of the opera as Fyodor Poyarok in The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia at the Nederlandse Opera (Amsterdam), and as Robert in a new production of the opera Iolanta at the Teatro Real (Madrid).
