Dr. Duncan Couch Interim Music and Artistic Director, Tampa Master Chorale; Director of Choral Music Activities at The University of South Florida

Dr. Duncan Couch served as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Stetson University from 1989 until his retirement in 2006, when he was appointed Professor Emeritus. Dr. Couch came to Stetson after serving nine years as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Missouri, Columbia. His teaching experience prior to UMC includes nine years as Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Director of Choral Activities at Southwest Baptist University, two years as conductor of the Concert Choir and University Chorus at the University of Kansas, and five years of high school teaching in Olathe and Lawrence, Kansas. Dr. Couch served as Interim Director of Choral Activities at Georgia State University, 2006-2007. He received his Ph.D., MM, and BME degrees from the University of Kansas.

Teaching responsibilities for Dr. Couch at Stetson included conducting the Concert Choir (72 voices), the Choral Union (290 voices,) and beginning through advanced conducting. At the University of Missouri, he instituted and guided the MM and PhD in Choral Conducting programs. He also conducted the University Singers (65 voices), Chamber Singers (20 voices), and the Choral Union (400 voices). He has conducted, or prepared choruses in performances with the Florida Symphony Orchestra (4 performances), the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (7), the Kansas City Symphony (3), the Florida Orchestra (2), the Orlando Philharmonic (6), the Orlando Opera (2), the Sydney Australia Symphony, the Russian State Orchestra, New York Bach Aria Group, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with Robert Shaw, conducting.

Dr. Couch is a past-president of The Florida American Choral Directors Association, Missouri-ACDA, and the seven-state Southwestern Division of ACDA. His professional affiliations include Phi Mu Alpha, Pi Kappa Lambda, MENC, FVA, ACDA, IFCM, College Music Society, and the American Choral Foundation.

Among the awards Dr. Couch has received are the Luther T. Spayde Award granted by the Choral Directors of Missouri for his "Dedication to the Choral Art", the Wayne T. Hugoboom Distinguished Service Award presented by the Florida Choral Directors for "Dedicated Service, Leadership, and Consistent Examples of Excellence In Choral Performance" and the Geneva Casebolt Award for "Excellence in Music Ministry" granted by Southwest Baptist University.

Dr. Couch has conducted all-state choirs, honors choirs, and festival or clinic choirs in twenty-eight states, and in Europe. He was founding director of the Kansas City All-Metro Choir, sponsored by the Hallmark Corporation. He has conducted festival choirs, with orchestra, in concerts in NYC's Carnegie Hall and he served one year as interim chorus master for the Tampa Bay Master Chorale.

Choirs under the direction of Dr. Couch have performed at professional music conferences at the state, divisional, and national levels.
