Biography
(1906-1986). French cellist. After early piano studies, he turned to the cello, later studying at the Paris Conservatory and the Ecole Normale de Musique, graduating with high honors.  Heralded as 'the cellist of the future', he was active both in chamber music concerts and orchestral programs as soloist.

Fournier taught at the Paris Conservatory through the 1940's. His concertizing continued widely, with a range of repertoire from the baroque through the 20th century.  Fournier's playing inspired many composers to write works for him. He premiered major new works by Poulenc, Martinu, Roussel and Martin.

By 1970 Fournier had settled in Switzerland, where he taught privately, and continued to perform into the 1980's.
