JAN CORNELIUS - BIO

Jan Cornelius hails from Houston, Texas, and comes from a lineage of opera singers. Both her grandmother and great-grandmother were classical singers who passed on their talent and passion for singing.

During the 2010-2011 season, Ms. Cornelius will sing the role of Musetta in La Bohéme with the Atlanta Opera, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte with Virginia Opera, and Giorgetta in Tabarro, Arabella in Arabella, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, all with the Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) in Philadelphia, where she began her studies in 2007 and continues to this day.

Ms. Cornelus' own voice studies began as a mezzo-soprano at Louisiana State University and continued at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music, where she earned her master's degree in vocal performance. During that time, she performed as a young artist with prestigious companies such as Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Chautauqua Opera, Pensacola Opera, Mobile Opera, Birmingham Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, and Ohio Light Opera.

After finishing her master's degree, she spent a year and a half as a resident artist with Virginia Opera's Spectrum Young Artist Program. While there, Ms. Cornelius performed children's operas for more than 150,000 school children across the Virginia countryside, at the same time making her main stage debut as Frasquita in Carmen and Nedda in Pagliacci. The summer of 2007 marked her debut with Chautauqua Opera as Micaela in Carmen.

She has also made her mark during her time with AVA, earning critical acclaim as Manon in Act II of Puccini's Manon Lescaut and in the wonderfully complex role of Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata. Ms. Cornelius burst onto the competition scene this year, winning second prize in the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Vocal Competition, as well as first prize in the Gerda Lissner Competition. In November 2009 at AVA, Jan performed her first Donizetti opera, as Anna Bolena in the opera by the same name, and Silvana in Respighi's La Fiamma.
