Biography
Anthony Newman is an American virtuoso of the organ, harpsichord, and pedal harpsichord as well as a prolific composer and conductor.

In the early 1970s his interpretations of Bach harpsichord and organ works drew much attention. While praised for his flawless technique he was also criticized for his fast tempi and use of rubato and ornamentation. Despite the fact that Newman's studious research demonstrated the validity of his approach in terms of Baroque era practices, traditionalists, mired in their 19th century misassumption that Bach should be played metronome-perfect and with slow reverence, still cling to a tradition that makes Bach's music emotionally restricted. Newman has continued to perform and conduct Baroque music in general, and Bach's keyboard works in particular, for the last 40 years in a way that makes the music vibrant and compelling.

Newman's organ and pedal harpsichord recording of Bach's organ works are spectacular. Recommended is Bach: Great Works for Organ
