Conductor: Roger Kalia
Visual art has inspired a number of composers over the years, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is one of the greatest examples of such inspiration. Featuring musical depictions of 10 paintings by his late friend, Viktor Hartmann,
Ravel’s orchestration of this masterpiece
showcases the entire orchestra in virtuosic
and dramatic fashion. Ravel wrote the stunningly beautiful Mother Goose Suite originally as a piano duet but later revised and expanded it into an orchestrated piece. Here again, Ravel’s mastery of
orchestration is apparent in the way he brings
these five children's pieces to life. Cellist Eric
Byers will make his EPO debut in a performance of
Shostakovich’s intense Cello Concerto No. 1, which is a tour de force for the cello.
