We close the season with Stravinsky’s riotous The Rite of Spring, a work so bold that it caused an uproar at its premiere in 1913. Stravinsky wanted to go back deep into humanity’s pagan roots to capture the animalistic nature buried within us. Taking inspiration from ancient folk music, he went further than anyone else in his use of rhythm and orchestral color to depict a pagan ritual in a prehistoric Russian village. Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” from Prince Igor shows us that perhaps Stravinsky’s “Rite” is not so much revolution as evolution. Tchaikovsky’s vast, sweepingly romantic First Piano Concerto sets the backdrop for a concert of drama and contrast.
