The English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was deeply humanistic in his outlook; even while driving ambulances on the frontlines of the First World War, he never lost a deep sense of connection to his fellow humankind. His epic First Symphony, using the choir throughout, energized a revival of symphonic and choral music in England. The composer set the words of Walt Whitman's poem to music, “Leaves of Grass,” to convey the bravery of humanity pitted against the vastness and power of the sea.

Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, dark, brooding, melodic and deeply romantic, captures the soul of the composer and the northern landscapes that shaped him.
