Gustav Mahler is now regarded as one of the most important composers of the late Romantic period, but his younger wife Alma was a writer of finely crafted and beautiful songs. After marrying, Gustav insisted that she cease writing music, and the world lost what would surely have been an important voice. Later, Gustav realized his mistake, and, on the advice of Freud, encouraged her to compose again, but she never did. Valentin Silvestrov’s Stille Musik (Silent Music), provides a ghostly bridge between Alma’s songs and Gustav’s mighty First Symphony.
