Ax plays Beethoven's "Emperor"
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Friday, 15 June 2018 - 8:00 PM
Saturday, 16 June 2018 - 8:00 PM
Sunday, 17 June 2018 - 2:30 PM
Conductor: Manfred Honeck
The Pittsburgh Symphony closes its BNY Mellon Grand Classics season with two monumental masterpieces. Pittsburgh favorite Emanuel “Manny” Ax returns with Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto. The quintessential concerto for the piano, the “Emperor” has it all – a striking opening, hymn-like adagio, and a glorious finish.

For the season finale, the Pittsburgh Symphony joins forces with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, tenor Paul Appleby, the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus and the grandeur of the organ for Berlioz’s Te Deum, a sensory extravaganza from the opening massive chords to the bombastic finale. Never before performed in Pittsburgh, Te Deum is not to be missed!

A pre-concert talk, beginning one hour prior to the performance in the auditorium, will be led by Associate Conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong. This talk is open to all ticketholders.

Immediately following this weekend’s concerts, ticketholders are invited to move closer to the stage and enjoy post-concert performances by Musicians of the PSO and some very special guests!

Friday Only:
Dvorák Piano Quintet in A Major, Opus 81, Allegro ma non tanto, featuring a special performance by Emanuel Ax, piano, Amy Schwartz Moretti, violin, Christopher Wu, violin, Tatjana Mead Chamis, viola and Anne Martindale Williams, cello.

Saturday & Sunday
The Jitterbug Waltz – Here’s that Rainy Day – featuring The Concord Jazz Quartet: Jeff Grubbs, bass, Andy Reamer, vibraphone, Eric Suseoff, guitar and Tom Wendt, drums.
