Tribute to Sofia Gubaidulina
Boston, Massachusetts
Monday, 27 February 2017 - 7:30 PM
Since 1967, John Heiss has taught NEC students the roots of 20th-century modernism both in the classroom and as a conductor and coach. His courses on Ives, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky have shaped generations of musicians.

Each year Heiss recruits students interested in performing 20th- and 21st-century music to join the NEC Contemporary Ensemble.

Coming at the conclusion of a week of performances of her music by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and NEC, tonight's concert honors renowned composer Sofia Gubaidulina. Before the concert, Gubaidulina will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Music degree by Interim President Thomas Novak. In celebrating this honor, John Heiss curates a concert of chamber music by Gubaidulina herself, along with Webern and Schoenberg.

Concluding tonight's program, the narrator for Schoenberg's commedia dell'arte piece Pierrot Lunaire is Paula Robison, who occupies NEC’s Donna Hieken Flute Chair. Robison knows the narration in German, French, and English—this will be a unique opportunity to hear her perform a vocal work.
