150th Birthday Chamber Music Gala
Boston, Massachusetts
Thursday, 23 February 2017 - 7:30 PM
A flight of performances.
A richness of artists.

In December, February, April, and May, New England Conservatory fills the air with the sounds of piano trios, string quartets, and more, both day and night. Performers include NEC's faculty of chamber music superstars, and the students coached by these great artists.

When New England Conservatory was founded, in 1867, what was the new music of the time? Brahms was an established composer; Tchaikovsky had just graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, and Dvorák ‘s music had not yet been heard in public.

Our students still bring the once-new music of those nineteenth-century masters to life, as well as music that is new to our 21st-century world. On February 23rd, our Chamber Music Department presents a concert of “new music” from now and from the founding years of our school. The concert begins and ends with pieces that were contemporary when NEC opened its doors, or shortly thereafter. Johannes Brahms’s Piano Quartet in A major was premiered in 1863, and his Piano Trio in C major was completed in 1882.

Between these two, we hear music that is contemporary now: Dmaathen by Iannis Xenakis is a rare duo for English horn and percussion, composed in 1976. Mike Martin, member of the trumpet section of the Boston Symphony, has just completed a piece for five trumpets entitled “The Universe Inside Your Brain.”
