Presenter: Hendricks Symphony
For Baroque Lovers Everywhere. The orchestra opens with J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major, a lively allegro showing off the virtuosity of the trumpet. Woodwinds, strings, and harpsichord play the second andante movement, allowing the brass to catch their breath before plunging into the third movement’s allegro assai where the driving polyphonic harmonies race right through to the last note.
Two other pieces featuring trumpet are Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets in C Major, in which guest artist Sergeant Major Gil Hoffer and Hendricks Symphony Orchestra’s Doctor Albert Lilly are featured, and Torelli’s Concerto for Trumpet in D Major with Hoffer as the soloist.
Dr. Lilly received his doctorate from the Jacobs School of Music at IU (Bloomington). Currently, he instructs trumpet at Marian University, is an adjunct professor at the College of Adult and Graduate Studies at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, and is the assistant Director of Bands at Monrovia High School, the only class D program in Indiana to win nine ISSMA “All Music Awards.” He has held positions of principal trumpet in several orchestras and has appeared in guest performances across the country from San Francisco to New York, either as a member of the orchestra or as a soloist, with dozens of wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, and orchestras. He has recorded radio and television commercials and jingles around Indiana, and his trumpet work can be heard on NPR, ESPN, and CBS records.
Sgt. Maj. Hoffer has been a student of the instrument since age nine under the tutelage of his stepfather, former Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra member Bob Day. With a Master’s degree in Trumpet Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Hoffer has enjoyed a career in the U.S. Army Bands. He is privileged to have participated as bugler for funerals in Arlington National Cemetery and for ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A member of the Maryland Philharmonic until 2009, he has performed with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Dominion Symphony/Manassas Ballet Theater. He is also a jazz artist and has been featured with the Capitol Bones Big Band on their annual Stan Kenton Christmas concerts and has recorded performances for Titanic Records.
