With a Song in My Heart
Roswell, Georgia
Friday, 12 May 2017 - 8:00 PM
Conductor: Michael O'Neal
The Golden Age of Popular Song is usually considered to have taken place in America from the late 1920s to the early 1960s. It includes songs that grew out of Tin Pan Alley and spanned the periods of the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, and the post-war years. The songs associated with the Golden Age combined melodic invention, harmonic richness, and lyrical creativity in a way that has not been experienced before or since.

The Golden Age included composers like Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and Richard Rodgers; lyricists such as Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Johnny Mercer, and Oscar Hammerstein II; and performers like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, and Judy Garland. The Tyrone Jackson Jazz Trio, which last performed with The Michael O’Neal Singers in the 2011 performance of Ballads, Blues, and Broadway will return to provide its unique and supportive artistry to the evening’s program of some of the greatest music of The Golden Age of Popular Song.
