La Tempesta
Somerville, Massachusetts
Sunday, 23 October 2016 - 3:00 PM
La Tempesta (The Storm) is a varied chamber music program engaging musicians from the Tufts faculty and student communities including pianist Edith Auner, cellist Emmanuel Feldman and violinist Emil Altschuler. The program begins with Brahms Piano Quartet in C minor, a masterpiece that embodies deep and intense emotions reminiscent of Sturm und Drang written after the painful passing of Brahms’ close friend, Robert Schumann. Following intermission, in the parallel key of C Major, is Rossini’s Sonata No. 3, composed at the ripe old age of 12 during the summer of 1804 at a villa on Italy’s Adriatic coastal town of Ravenna. This colorful virtuosic and underplayed work shows off the abilities of all the performers. The Mahler Quartet, recently popularized by Martin Scorsese’s 2010 motion picture Shutter Island, was composed when Mahler was only 16 (the same age as Mendelssohn when he composed the Octet). It is dark, deep and fully contrasting again with Mendelssohn’s Octet, summarized best by Conrad Wilson: "Its youthful verve, brilliance and perfection make it one of the miracles of nineteenth-century music."
