NEC Philharmonia, Weilerstein/Shaw, Beethoven, Rachmaninov
Boston, Massachusetts
Wednesday, 8 February 2017 - 7:30 PM
Ensemble: NEC Philharmonia
Conductor: Joshua Weilerstein
Newly appointed Artistic Director of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Joshua Weilerstein returns to his alma mater to conduct the orchestra in which he served as concertmaster while a student.

This season, NEC's orchestra programs allow you to discover the music of living composers—many of them women—alongside familiar masterworks.

A Far Cry commissioned the orchestral version of Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte around the time she was announced as the youngest-ever Pulitzer Prize winner in 2013. Shaw's eclectic career has since included collaborations with Kanye West and an artist residency at Dumbarton Oaks.

Shaw writes of her original version for string quartet: "Entr’acte was written in 2011 after hearing the Brentano Quartet play Haydn’s Op. 77 No. 2 — with their spare and soulful shift to the D-flat major trio in the minuet. … I love the way some music (like the minuets of Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition."

Soloist for the Beethoven concerto will be chosen by internal competition.
