Concert: Mahler's 1st
Santa Cruz, California
Saturday, 23 January 2016 - 8:00 PM
Watsonville, California
Sunday, 24 January 2016 - 2:00 PM
Conductor: Daniel Stewart
Gustav Mahler's towering Symphony no. 1 remains a beloved and inspiring landmark in the history of symphonic music. From Wagnerian heights of passion to innocently ironic quotations of folk song, Mahler spans centuries and continents of tradition while simultaneously and presciently setting the musical tone for much of the early 20th century. Edvard Grieg's iconic incidental music for Ibsen's Peer Gynt instantaneously paints pictures in our minds eye thanks to its idyllic and vivid portrayals of episodes from the protagonists' surreal journeys.
