NEC Symphony, Loebel/ Schubert, Tchaikovsky
Boston, Massachusetts
Wednesday, 1 February 2012 - 8:00 PM
Conductor: David Loebel
NEC Associate Director of Orchestras David Loebel conducts the NEC Symphony in two masterpieces of the orchestral literature. Former Music Director of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Loebel has been praised for his authoritative command of a wide range of repertory.

Philip Kennicott of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has written: "With Loebel, one always gets a performance of strict integrity. Fidelity to the score is paramount, and extremism in the name of liberty is out." In an all-Russian program featuring the Shostakovich Eighth Symphony and two Tchaikovsky works, "Loebel was at his best during those passages that required firmness and control; much of the Largo was exquisitely balanced and refined, as was the final movement's "morendo" conclusion. The Shostakovich was paired with two concertato works for cello and orchestra by Tchaikovsky, the Variations on a Rococo Theme and the Pezzo capriccioso. Loebel is a sensitive accompanist, effortless and attentive in his support of the soloist."
