“A Little Night Music”: The most famous work on this summer’s theme could hardly be overlooked in our programming! Mozart’s melodies are so popular that the sparrows could whistle them from the rooftops – and that would of course alter nothing with regard to “the high quality of this piece of occasional music,” as Wolfgang Hildesheimer aptly remarked. Also involving the night as far as its title is concerned is the “Serenata notturna,” which Mozart composed while he was still in Salzburg, in the middle of a cold winter in January 1776: a kind of “outdoor music” for the heated room? In any case, Othmar Schoeck takes us outdoors with his idyllic “Summer Night” from 1945, which is based on the poem of the same name by Gottfried Keller. A lyrical model also inspired Arnold Schoenberg to write “Transfigured Night,” which mirrors the atmospheric verse of Richard Dehmel. And with two early orchestral pieces from 1900, Franz Schreker conjures up the spirit of Romanticism once more.
