Surreal dream worlds, macabre nocturnal scenes, and a terrific resurrection are on the bill for the program planned by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA’s Brass Ensemble, whose concerts have long enjoyed something of a cult status. This time the celebrated brass players focus entirely on works by Modest Mussorgsky, “the greatest of Russian composers,” as his later compatriot Dmitri Shostakovich termed him, with no trace of envy. In “Night on Bald Mountain,” Mussorgsky conjures a Witches’ Sabbath with elemental force; “Songs and Dances of Death” depict the Grim Reaper’s triumph as he assumes various guises, from a dazzling seducer and an urbane general to a noble knight and even a comforting savior. “Pictures at an Exhibition,” on the other hand, pays homage to a figure that is already dead: the painter Viktor Hartmann, whose art would have vanished into oblivion, had not Mussorgsky composed this resounding musical monument – and in the process awakened Russian art to new life.
