In Remembrance - A Choral Tribute
San Francisco, California
Sunday, 20 March 2011 - 4:00 PM
2011 marks the ten year anniversary of September 11, 2001. In March we offer a choral tribute as we remember the lives lost during this tragic day. We hope to provide peace and harmony; sharing the beauty of the choral art form through a combined community of singers.

San Francisco Concert Chorale will be joined by the Ohlone Chamber Singers and the Valley Concert Chorale for this special event. The combined chorus of 90 singers, soloists, and chamber orchestra will be under the direction of John Emory Bush and Dennis Keller.

The concert features Herbert Howells’ Requiem, composed in 1936 but not released for performance until 1980. One of the great choral gems of the 20th century, written for unaccompanied double choir, this is a Requiem for the living; filled with comfort, hope and thanksgiving. The work radiates glorious lush chords and harmonies that transcend the spirit. The text alternates between Latin and English including a movement based on the 23rd Psalm.

The second half of the program highlights another significant choral masterwork from the 20th century, Arthur Honegger's King David. This highly expressive and dramatic music is both tender and powerful. After its’ enthusiastic premiere in 1923, the work was heard in virtually every music center around the world. The text follows the major events in the biblical story of David. The final numbers seem transfigured, offering a shining vision with a concluding triumphant and joyful Alleluia!

The great American composer Stephen Paulus will be represented by two beautiful selections; Hymn to America and The Road Home, each capturing the spirit and essence of this unforgettable concert experience.
