Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1961, Claudio began studying the cello at the age of seven, following in the footsteps of his parents - both professional musicians. In July, 1977, he attended the First International Cello Course in Paraiba, Brazil, which was directed by Aldo Parisot, distinguished concert cellist and professor at Yale School of Music. Within seven years of his "discovery" by Parisot, Claudio received two degrees from Yale University, won top prizes in eight competitions, appeared with orchestras in the United States, Canada, and Brazil, and presented a critically acclaimed New York debut in Town Hall. Upon winning the 1982 Villa-Lobos International Cello Competition, one reviewer declared his selection as winner "the easiest decision in the history of the competition." As a competitor in the 1983 Debut Competition, he was awarded not only the Gregor Piatigorsky Memorial Cello Prize as the top cellist, but also the H.
