October 5, 2016, NEC Opera presented a semi-staged performance in Jordan Hall, of Falla's "La vida breve" featuring NEC's top singers and the NEC Philharmonia, conducted by Douglas Kinney Frost, and directed by NEC's Opera Studies chair, Joshua Major. The opera was performed in Spanish, with English subtitles. Manuel de Falla's La vida breve (The Short Life) is a short opera that manages to pack in the essential element of grand opera: the grandiose death of the spurned lover at the finale. The class divide between the gypsy woman Salud and her well-to-do love object Paco, and the final confrontation at Paco's wedding to a woman of his own class, bring extra spice to the doomed-love formula. Cast Salud: Erica Petrocelli La Abuela: Brindley McWhorter Carmela: Morgan Middleton Paco: David Rivera Manuel: Nicholas Tocci El Tío Salvador: Christopher Carbin Tenor Voice: Rafael Delsid El Cantaor: Josh Quinn Chorus Natalie Bernstein-Park, Grant Braider, Christon Carney, Wei En Chan, Rush
