I love Brahms, and am a big fan of the Brahms Symphony no 1. No, I see I am going to be a big fan of Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic. This feels to me like Brahms with a very light touch. The way these musicians play here, with less legato, more detachment and separation between the musical phrases, makes me listen to this work almost as if I were hearing it for the first time. Certainly, I am hearing different aspects than I am used to. And the tempos are more brisk. Now don't get me wrong, I love the slower, more lush phrasing of the many classic recordings I have of this work, and won't give them up. But I really feel this performance sheds new light on a much beloved work. Bravo! London Phil and Maestro Jurowski.
