Gale Edward’s much heralded production of La Boheme is a perfect winter’s tale. Opening in a freezing artist’s garret, the bundled singers who were huddled for warmth looked much like that evening’s audience who had braved a blustery Sydney winter’s night to attend Puccini’s most popular work.

If you’ve seen, know and love Rent, you’ve kind-sorta seen La bohème and, though the music is, obviously, quite, quite different, you’ll probably love it too. What makes it all the easier to love is this spiffing, shiny new production (the first, if I’m not mistaken, since Baz Luhrmann’s 1990 take) from Opera Australia...

The singing is excellent, the costumes are often dazzling, the cavernous set is ingenious, the lighting is artfully done and the orchestra lends wings to Puccini’s soaring music...

I ended the evening sobbing but had a truly wonderful time. Go figure - The American soprano, Takesha Meshè Kizart, thrilled Sydney audiences last year as a wondrously sung and acted Tosca and she demonstrates the depth of her talent as the fragile, tragic and luminously, spiritually beautiful Mimi.
