Geoffrey Gordon has been awarded the 2017 Merz Prize in music composition by the Mario Merz Foundation. Held every two years, the Mario Merz Prize, was established with the intent of identifying and bringing to the public eye personalities in the field of art and contemporary music, through the expertise of a large international network of experts. The music prize includes a commission for a major new work for string orchestra, to premiere during the 2018 concert season.

The work is for double choir and solo cello, and this recording is provided courtesy of Danish Radio. The performance was recorded live, 30 April 2017, at Holmens Kirke, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Today is the 150th birthday of the iconic painter Wassily Kandinsky, an artist beloved of musicians worldwide. In his honour, we offer a sneak peek at our forthcoming recording of composer Geoffrey Gordon's ultra virtuoso double concerto for trumpet and piano, inspired by two of Kandinsky's most striking and colourful paintings (All Saints I and In Blue). Geoffrey Gordon's FATHOMS: Five Impressions of Shakespeare's The Tempest (with Prelude) for cello and piano will receive its UK premiere on 8 May 2017, at historic St John's Smith Square, in London. Cellist Toke Moldrup, for whom the work was commissioned, and pianist Steven Beck, will reprise their Carnegie Hall performance (praised by the New York Times) of FATHOMS on a program which includes works by Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Winterleben, a new work by composer Geoffrey Gordon, commissioned by the Colburn School for Los Angeles Philharmonic principal horn, Andrew Bain, is set to premiere as part of the International Horn Symposium in Los Angeles in August.
