Classical MPR Remembers Michael Steinberg
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2009/...
It's a mark of Michael Steinberg's unique place in American cultural life that his career as a musicologist touched so personally and deeply so many people from all walks. Most of us first "met" Steinberg in the half-dark of an auditorium just before a concert. While the instrumentalists tuned, there in our laps were program notes that were scholarly, elegant, touching and witty. Just like the man himself. Reading Steinberg, or talking with him, one became aware that classical music is an endeavor every bit as rewarding of serious lifelong study as politics, religion, business, etc. Through Steinberg, one began to fall in love with brand new pieces, or old favorites all over again. Is there a greater gift?
