Mendelssohn Club was founded in 1874 by William Wallace Gilchrist (1846-1916), one of the leading musical figures in nineteenth century Philadelphia. Gilchrist studied privately with Hugh Clarke (who was later Professor of Music at the University of Pennsylvania) from 1865-68.
