The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 (the Vienna Philharmonic in 1842) by Los Angeles millionaire and avid amateur musician William Andrews Clark, Jr. The orchestra's first music director was Walter Rothwell, hired away from the St Paul Symphony.
