How can a tenor be so fabulous and yet so little known? Though an opera fan, I admit I'd never heard of RDS until his unscheduled Met debut in Tristan & Isolde on 3/22/08. I loved his Tristan in Acts I and II, and by Act III I was saying "Wow!" over and over again under my breath. I ran out and bought all 4 of his CDs!
Am I his only American fan?

I saw him as Tristan in Bayreuth. Didn't much like the production but the orchestra played well and Robert Dean Smith was a very credible Tristan. I think Ben Heppner was the best I heard in this role at the Met about 15 years ago. Heppner's voice has slipped and I was disappointed when I saw him last year. Smith is probably the best Tristan I have experienced in the last 5 years.
