Heitor Villa-Lobos, Composer
(1887-1959). Brazil's greatest composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos was born in 1887 in Rio de Janeiro, and died in the same city in 1959. His early musical life involved popular as much as classical music. He played guitar in a "Choros" ensemble, where his nickname was "Classical Guitar". He played in a cinema orchestra (accompanying silent films) at the Odeon Theatre, along with the great pianist Ernesto Nazareth. I nominate the Nonetto - http://www.villalobos.ca/nonetto - a great modernist work from 1923.
It's finally easily available on a new CD, which contains two vintage recordings - http://www.villalobos.ca/node/1468
Even though it's nominally a nonet, with percussionists and choir, a performance of this work fills a large stage.
The recent explosion of recordings and live performances of less popular VL works is giving us a chance to hear more than usual suspects. Which works have especially impressed you?
