(1739 - 1813) also known as Jan Kritel Vanhal, and Johann Baptist Wanhal. Born in Bohemia, this Czech composer started life in a small village and had a few siginifcant breaks that ultimately lead him to taking composition lessons in Vienna from Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf. Vanhal was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, and had an noticeable influence on the Sturm and Drang movement. If you like Haydn and Mozart, you will like Vanhal as well. There is a four volume collection of Vanhal's symphonies on Naxos that I highly recommend and they are very reasonably priced.
