(1854-1932).  American conductor, bandmaster, teacher and author.  Sousa first studied violin, but his gift for mastering wind instruments was evident from an early age. He played in a variety of ensembles, including theater orchestras and military bands, and performed in the festival orchestra conducted by Jacques Offenbach during his North American visit (1876) for the U.S. centennial.
